I have a 1954 500 Case Diesel. Manual states it should be turning 1350 RPMs. I have noticed that a Model 600 turns 1450 RPMs and is rated at 10 more horsepower. I have done some research, limited, and can't fine anything different in the two engines except the increase of 100 RPMs on the 600. Am I missing something. I know the rear ends are the same, transmissions are different, but what about the basic engine. Mine is in excellent shape, engine, and I would like a little more HP out of it. Don't want those R and 80 John Deeres to get away from me at local plowing matches.

Gary; Go ahead and crank the RPM up on it. My 701B is a 4 cylinder version of the same engine. I have worked it in the field for 30 years at 2200 rpm and had no problems with it. Not a green tractor at our plow days that will stay with it. I pulled this tractor for a couple years in the 70's turning at 3200 RPM. 115 Horsepower checked on the dyno at 1000 RPM setting. Lots of smoke from the inline pump. Pulled 7500 lb class in 3rd gear with 18.4X34 tires. Just loved leaving those JD 4020's in the dust... Gene

Thanks to all for your comments. I was concerned that they, Case Engineers, may have also turned up the pump, messed with the timing, or what ever, when they turned up the RPMs. Pump work I don't do. Don't have the equipment or knowledge. I do know that you can spend $750 - $1000 on a pump real easy, they seem to always fine something that needs to be replaced. I may be all alone in this catagory, but I do have to explain to my wife why I spent the money when it was running fine! Boy, I hate that.

The 900 even has a higher rpm. Don't have the figures in front of me. The 500,600,900 and 900B all had the 377 diesel engine, all different rpm settings. The late 1958 900B,s and the 1959 900's went to a inline pump for better performance yet. Let me know how you come out. I been tempted putting a inline on my 600 or my 1957 900 to see if it will improve it's pulling desire.
