Does it take special tools to re-core a radiator? I'm pretty good with a torch, but what else is required?

It requires excellent talent with a torch, good metal fit and verrrry clean metal....plus alot of luck. But the biggest challange is finding a retailer that will acquire the proper replacement new core and sell it to you. Around here, I've not found a radiator shop that will do that for anybody. They sell you the new core installed on your tanks and side frames ... hence the name ... recored radiator. Cost me $350 to recore my 930 Diesel rad last year. I'm feel it was a good buy.

After looking at all options, my 430 radiator is being recored right now. It's certainly not cheap ~$375, but I know what I got rather than taking a chance on salvaged unit. Should last another 35 years. My situation is simlar to Jim's. The shop would not sell the core separately.

A bolt in core is time, and more time,.... not over your head. A soldered core is a bit of a art, they use those wide low heat torch heads, which makes it seem easy. Will need to acid clean it also. Ole Bob downtown has done them forever. Don L.

Thanks for the input. Having one re-cored seems very expensive. I wonder how much of the re-coring costs are materials and how much of it is labor? I see some web sites that say they will sell cores to indiviuals. I wonder what the cost would be for core to fit a Case SC? I'm going to investigate further.
