Hey you guys with old DC's. I'm working on 4 of them, and all 4 had serious clutch problems, even though three of them still worked. Either plates were broken, springs broken, pilot bearings shot, and in the case of the foot clutch, the carrier plate hub was broken. I guess with 52+ year old stuff it should be expected. The machine with a bad transmission howl, had four bad bearings, way to much lash on the main drive pinion, and loose chains, all four needed chain tightening and three of the four needed brakes. All neded at least one bearing in the trany.

The one with the "overhauled" engine leaked a seady stream of oil out of the front seal. It turned out that the previous owner never pulled the timing cover (I can see why, because we broke the pulley pulling it) and although the machine had new babbit and bew main bearings, the old engine must have been so shot it made the front seal housing egg shaped, no way to stop it, so we built a new one. It had been overheating, and ran rough, and he must have tried everything,(I believe he sold it in frustration), because he had a new radiator, etc. The problem was, he planed the head but never ran a die over the head studs, and the threads were carboned up, even though he torqued it to specs, it didn't tighten down properly, and three of the four cylinders were leaking, plus the tappets were not set properly, valve guides were worn out and three valves, though freshly ground, needed replacing.

Just thought I'd share my experience in case some of you are suffering similar problems.

Somewhere around here I have a rebuilt foot clutch pressure plate. Took two to make one. The plates are most always cracked. Don L.

John, in a way we have. We have cast new ehaust manifolds, new PTO cover seat brackets (post 1952 models, resurfaced a couple of gears, resurfaced a couple of flywheels, resurfaced a couple of shift rods, manufactured 4 new clutch plates, 8 new brake discs, dozenzs of new bushings for everything from clutch handles to steering wheels and wide front ends, made several new exhaust and intake valves, new pulley brake pads, various Eagle Hitch parts and who knows what else we may find.

The hand clutch was a lot more durable than the foot. With any power you will not hold a foot clutch. I have used the overcenter with turbo setups on alcohol at 50 LBS + manifold pressure, pulled 3rd gear with D sprockets with 18.4 X38 double cut tires at VERY high rpm, no rpm loss out at the end and the clutch held. Any one familiar with NTPA pulling in the 60's is familiar with this tractor. Hand clutch, The ONLY thing I have in common with the Deere boys (the dark side). mEl

It really wasn"t all that hard to do, Give me a few days to get some old photos around and put to disc so I can post them. I am a computer dummy at moving photos to forums or e mail, so will probably have to get some coaching, but I promise I will do my best, the photos will be actual photos shot at a county fair in the pull. Bear with me till I get this accomplished, I did not know there would be any real interest in it but I will be glad to accomodate you if I can.

Are you kidding? A turbo DC Case will spark our hearts so much we'll forget it's middle of Winter. I'm getting pretty warm just thinking about it. Looking forward to the pictures.
