I know it has been said over and over again that an SC is not the best choice for a puller, but still have a temptation to put one together. There are getting to be a few DC's around, and although I've been looking for a CC for about 2 years I haven't been able to track one down in my area or price range. Cliff has the only SC that I know of that pulls in our area, and I've yet to see that pull. Just wondering if it has any potential to keep up with the H's and C's with combine motors (have a C around that can pull 7,000 lb in 3rd gear). Can it be stripped down below 3500 lbs? There seem to be a lot of SC's floating around and you can usually find them pretty cheap. Hmmm....maybe a DC repower - bellhousings probably way off :)??

My sc has nothing special but it pulls good in 4500lb class but is over powered by larger tractors in 5000lb class, It needs to be on a diet and put in 3500lb class and up but its is a nice orignal sc and i am keeping it that way,I am gowing to try to win a points in 4500lb at 1 or 2 places this year, I think if i had another sc to make into a puller the engine has could be made just as strong as a H, I think could be bored and stroked over 300 cui but the head and manifold would be the downfall, As for expince it cost alot to do one over stock so changing it wouldnt be alot worse if i spent the same money on a H or a WC people wouldnt think aney thing about it. cliff

Tell me where all these SCs are!! I am looking for one and they all seem to be in Michigan, Iowa or Ohio. I am looking for a 54-55 SC in the TX, AR, OK, LA area. Seen any?

If you are going to pull an SC you don't want a '52,'53, or '54. They are way too heavy and you can't get rid of the weight. A '42 to '51 would be a better choice because you can get rid of the motor lift, pto,(must have working PTO here) front weight, heavy front wheels and use a mag and get rid of the starter, generator, battery and lights. Modify the drawbar and shead some there too. The only thing you want from a '53 or '54 is the engine block. They are a little scarce

Not interested in pulling contests. I am looking for this year model SC to work on a place I just bought. I want the weight for traction, starter for convinence and 3 pt for implements. If anyone knows of one in running condition with useable tires I am in the market for these year model SCs. I realize those sold as 55s were actually built in late 54.

If you are serious about finding an SC we have three. 42' model, could run $300. 44' model, needs a magneto $700. 54' model, foot clutch, live power, 3pt hitch, that I would really have to think about before I price. Right now it has a bad coil we think. Where are you located? We are in 20 miles west of Louisville, KY. I also have three DC's, and a fourth parts tractor.

The 54 is exactly what I am looking for.

I have a self imposed budget, so I would like to know what condition the old girl is in. Does it run? If so, how are the tires? Can it be used for a while, couple of years, working around my little spread pulling, pushing (with a Blade) leveling, mowing etc. I would like to use it for a while before I do a winter tear down and restoration. If the only thing that is wrong is the coil, by the way, why does it have a coil? As I recall our 54 SC had a mag. Are remote hydraulics hooked up and operational, last SC I looked at the hydraulic connections and connecting hoses had been removed and the fittings on the primary outlets plugged off. Lots of questions.

Kentucky is a far site closer than Traverse City, MI where the last SC I inquired about was. The shipping cost added to sales price was too much for me, but Kentucky may be different. I live just South of Houston, TX in the small town of Pearland.

You were asking earlier if the '54 parts will bolt onto a '44. There are too many parts that will not interchange from '54 to '44. The easiest thing to do is to change the engine if you have a good old pre '52 engine. You will need to transfer flywheel clutch, pressure plate and install a new clutch pilot bearing in the flywheel. Everything will bolt to the '54 chassis from there. I have two of them. For pulling, the '54 is too heavy and will power out. If you have a good '54 engine, change the same items listed above with pre '52 parts. I have not pulled my '44 yet but I am hoping to this weekend.
I haven't weighed it yet, but I have left off anything that bolts on except the gas tank, hood, and grill.

I think I read something that Don L. wrote about being able to bore the 1953 and after model SC engine sleeves out to accept larger pistons in the 4-inch range.
