I have one that runs well but there is a kind of knocking sound that appears to be coming from behind the belt pulley. Is this something serious and will it get worse with time.I don't work the DC4 just drive it around once in a while.Any thoughts? Dan in AB

Hey DCM: I wish my experience was like Don's, but it wasn't. My Ring & Pinion went bad. The Ring Gear is on the Pulley Shaft. I had a bushing on the Pinion Shaft go bad & in turn, it ruined the gears. Better check it out & don't run it.

Dan,
You probably have a bad bearing on the belt pulley cross shaft, usually on the opposite end from the pulley. We drove a DC-3 like that for many years. A new one was very easy to put in, however, and by taking one shim out the clanging was completely gone.

Don, would that be behind the 3-corner cast plate. What does a shim removal do to improve the problem. I will check the bearing out and replace if needed.Dan in AB

Yes, that's the place. When I took that bearing out, one-half of the balls were gone (down in the sump). When we put the new bearing in, one shim was left out to keep the clearances right. I agree with John, it should be fixed. Don
