580C hard to start

Earlier this year I installed new injectors, had the fuel pump serviced and timed the works at minus 8 from TDC. The manual and the local Case dealer recommend minus 8. The rocker box cover notes it as zero though maybe that is a mis stamped 8. Hard to tell.

Even before I put in new injectors it was always hard to start, and still is. A lot of cranking involved to get it to fire, though it pumps out a lot less smoke, but I still hear a pronounced knock which might be preignition (or not).

Any suggestions as to why it is so hard to start? It happens in all seasons when the engine is cold. Ether does not make that much difference it seems to me.

There was a zero degree mod kit available for the Roosa pump used on 580 c's to update early pumps, the later ones were 0 degrees. The decal is no doubt correct. the kit consisted of parts to install in the timing control piston on the bottom of the fuel pump, the purpose was to get the fuel in at tdc when the compression heat was max to aid cold start problems. If the fuel pump is the original one , retime to 0 and it should be right. However if any doubt, you will have to have the pump checked at a Roosa service center to determine the correct amount of advance built into the pump. mEl

What??? The timing on the diesel is 8 degrees BTDC (Before Top Dead Center). Turn the motor over until the flywheel indicator shows 8 degrees BTDC, turn the fuel off, remove the small cover on the injection pump, unscrew the three injection pump flange bolts slightly, and turn the pump to align the marks in the injection pump, tighten the three bolts, replace the injection pump cover, turn the fuel back on. When everything is set correctly, if your motor is mechanically good, it"s one of the BEST starting diesels regardless of the weather.

I have it timed at minus 8. Still hard to start (always was) so maybe it should be at zero. I will have to try that and see - too cold out right now.

Happy New Year to all

Make sure the engine is turning over fast, it won't start if the batteries are low or under amp requirement for the job also the nippon starter will do a better job than the delco. we live in cold country and the hottest group 30 you can find will be best 1000 amp or better. mEl
