I usually hang ont on the AC board, but here is one for Case folks. Friend at work brought in a calender today and it had a picture of a 1928 Case K 18-32 tractor. Real nice looking, someone did a lot of work. Now here is the question. On the exhaust there is a thing that looks like a "steam whistle", what is the purpose? There is a T handle valve that looks like you would shift the exhaust gas from the pipe, which points to the left, to this whistle which points straight up. The T handle extends to the rear, but not too far, would be a stetch for the operator to reach it. What did they put a whistle on this tractor for? A leftover from steam traction engines? It doesn't look to have any muffler, would have made enoght noise to warn anyone and everyone it was comming without any whistle.

Hi wdTom,
The exhaust whistles that you mention, are exactly that. Their purpose was to signal to thresher crews, for various reasons, such as lunch breaks etc etc. They are very collectable today.

WDTom,
I posted a couple pics of Case x-motors and exhaust whistles on this website in the galleries section. One in the tractors section and one in the parts & pieces section. I took the pics this past summer at a show here in MI. -SmartAxe

If you'd like to see close up pics of one, hunt down Dr. Cy Kosis, on this board. He collects Aermores. He's probably the authority around these parts...

That is the exhaust whistle. It was used just like the steam whistle on the steam engines. That is how the men comunicated while threshing. (Quiting time, Linch time, FIRE!!!)
