We have an 830 comfort king with the case-o-matic transmision and clutch set-up. The problem seems to be the valve operated by the foot clutch doesn't completely shut the oil off to the torque converter. Thus the transmission never stops turning. You can grind it into gear by almost killing the engine or put the high low selector on the console into the neutral position, select gear on floor, then quickly slap the range back in. Not very good for moving roud bales off the field.

Ok fellas here is the scoop. I have a 1963 830 diesel. It has an eight speed trans that is comprised of a four speed with a high-low range. The range selector is on the left side of the steering column. Between high and low is marked S but it is neutral. Coming to a dead stop doesn't matter. The torque converter sould stop becase the rear end is not turning the main shaft in the tranny. Any ways the problem is in the valve spool on the left side like Roger mentioned. My question is there a way to fix this. Case no longer offers the reman assembly. We have installed new spool but didn't fix it, Short of machining the whole assembly. Lastly the other lever next to the steering column is a torque shiftlever. This was Case's first attempt a an on-the-go power shift. In all actuallity it is a torque converter lock-out. The high speed selection being locked out and to slow down aproximately a half gear, pull it back and the torque takes over. Thanks.

Hey Woodrow: Your only solution may be to take the converter out & overhaul it.

Hey Woodrow: I start them in gear. It could be dangerous, & you have to by-pass the neutral switch. Then come to a complete stop before changing gears. I rebuilt the converter on my 800 & it doesn't drag a bit. Even when cold. Unbelievable but true. 1st one I ever saw that didn't drag.

I haven't heard of one almost killing the engine, all of the Case O Matics will grind to some extent ESPECIALLY in colder weather & depending on what oil you are using in the convertor, on Dad's 830 he ran ATF in the convertor & transmission for years, being thinner, it didnt grind too bad, we put Case TCH oil in the convertor a few years ago & man what a difference that made, I noticed it right away that it would grind a lot more especially in the winter so its going to get changed back someday. One thing you might try & maybe you do this already, come to a complete stop before shifting, if you did loader work where you go from forward to reverse a lot stopping completely helps a lot. You may still have a valve problem, I dont know, but try stopping completely first & see what happens. I did notice that with the TCH oil even in the cold, it did get better soon after the oil warmed up.

Was there an alternate transmission selection for 830-930, that is something different than the Case-O-Matic? How do you know you have the Case-O-Matic??

on the 730 & 830's you had either a dry clutch or the Case O Matic, the 8 speed gear transmission behind the clutch or Case O Matic was the same, on the 930's you had a six or eight speed transmission, they quit the six in 1967, you could get either a foot or hand operated dry clutch in the six speeds & I think only a foot clutch in the eight speeds, I've never seen a hand clutch in an eight speed anyway. If you have a Case O Matic, the clutch pedal operates a valve spool on the left side of the tractor, the other valve spool in the valve body operates the direct drive clutches in the Case O Matic system, the earlier tractors have a lever up by the steering wheel on the left side of the column, the comfort kings have a knob to pull down by the hi-low range lever.

I'm quite sure, at least the one I drove, had a six-speed. It also had a foot clutch. I don't recall seeing another knob along side the High-Low lever. I'm getting anxious more than ever to get them back home and see what I've got!
