DC4 PTO w/Snowblower - turns the wrong way...

I just hooked up a 6 foot snowblower to the back of my DC4 (it was previously cleverly but unsafely rigged up on the front of the tractor with a drive shaft running underneath). Well, I got it all set up on the back where I thought it was originally intended to go. Tonight, after getting 7" of snow, I tried it out only to find that the snow blower auger is turning the wrong way. I believe I will have to replace the right angle gear box on the snowblower with one that the output turns the other way. Does anyone know: 1) is there a way to change the direction of rotation of a right angle gearbox? or 2) can the direction of rotation of the PTO on the DC4 be reversed?

I believe that the answer is no to both questions, but I thought I'd ask before I go find another gearbox...

Thanks

Don't put it on the front too quick. Some gear boxes are reverseable. Remove the cover and see if the auger out put shaft gear can be moved to the opposite side of the drive gear. Sometimes its just as simple as removing the shaft and assembling with a space and gear in each others place.

Thanks, I looked into this and found that this gearbox is not reversible... It would have been a nice feature.

The job's done now, the blower is back on the front and I had to undo all my modifications... I even had to weld my PTO shaft back together... Amazingly, it works...

Thanks to all!

Could you run it with a belt instead of a chain if you could install pulleys in place of the sprockets? You could then put a twist in your belt to reverse the direction of rotation. I like front mounted snow removal equipment much better. I wish my blade was on the front.

Thanks for all the advice -- after consulting with several people and based on the input from this board, I have decided to put the blower back on the front. It is the least troublesome of all options and I will end up with a working blower on the front of the tractor which I am now convinced is the way to go. Thanks for all of the clever alternatives. I happen to be a mechanical engineer and these solutions made me remember back to my machine design days... If only I had retained a little more...

Thanks to all!

Now you know why it was mounted on the front. I have a brand new albeit 12 year old under-tractor frame that was intended to go on a Yanmar tractor that has the gearbox in the back, and a long shaft supported on pillow block bearings underneath that runs all the way to the front. It looks like it will fit my DC4 so now I'm looking for a blower. It actually is so beefy I could use it for a snowplow frame too if I wanted too. Why not just improve the front mount set-up and run it that way? It would be a lot easier on your back! By the way, a good way to support the front end of the frame would be to hang it directly off of the front axle on both sides. It's very strong on the DC4's...John

We do this in Cambodia. Not for snowblowers, but for rice mills etc. You can flip the gearbox over, flip the augers over as well and run them from the other end of the snowblower, that will reverse the rotation, but may not solve the auger problem, depending on how they are formed. If that won't work you can also check your chain drive to the auger. If (it)they are currently hooked up from sprocket to sprocket you can bypass the driven sprocket with the chain wraping around one side and rotating on an idler sprocket that you place beyond the driven sprocket. This will reverse the rotation. I'm not sure if these explanations make any sense, and may be more trouble than they are worth. LOL! & Merry Christmas!
