Hi again all.
Have fixed the knocking problem. It was a wrist pin bearing gone, caused by a broken top ring loading the piston up,I think. anyway now the motors back together and running well (shock horror). It sounds like it has a canary chirping away inside at idle. tweet, tweet, tweet, tweet, tweet it goes. Do you think its anything to worry about or just keep driving it. By the way its a 188d.
Peter

Sometimes a head gasket leaking compression can chirp.

Peter, I think you had better find out what is making that cherping/tweeting noise. Not being there to actually hear it, can't be sure, but if it were my engine, it would not run until I was sure why that sort of noise was there. Noise that is acceptible is a slight scraping sound with a new bore and rings, rocker arms that are tapa, tapa (which can be eliminated by careful adjustment, hot or cold) and in your engine the usual clatter of compression ignition. The worse problems you may have is a piston pin not retined, rod bearing cap backwards,to name two things that come to mind, that can cause such noise. Expensive and not good. Maybe you are lucky and it is only a fan belt or water pump. Anyway, check it out, be sure before it is too late. G.S.
