52 sc brake seals and oil line question

I have to replace the brake seals on this tractor, so first I checked the manual, then the archives on this site. In the manual it said about pulliing the transmission top cover off and blocking up the differential before I take the bearing carrier off. After reading the archives, I don't see anybody saying they did this. So is it necessary to do or not? Also I took the oil filter canister off tonight to clean it, I was planning on replacing the little oil lines to it and the gauge, but they look like there flared the opposite way I have ever seen a line flared. Can I just go to the part store and get new fittings so I can make new lines or am I stuck using the old ones?
Thanks for your help, jstpa

The bearings and seals there are two seals, can be replaced without taking the top off. when you silde the brake cover back on use a small soda bottle with the top cut off this will help keep the seals from getting cut on the spline. I have replaced the bearings as well this way just make sure that you seat the bearings tight on the shaft shoulder and put all the shims in when done. Then all you do is check for float and you are set.

good luck

Best as I can recall on our, 47 or 49? Sc, when the carrier is removed the shaft slipped down a little bit, and out a little as well. After replacing the seal, I had a heck of a time replacing the bearing carrier , and had to take the cover off to adjust the shaft anyway. Taking the cover off isn't bad at all anyway, as long as you don't move the gears to much (put in neutral, no problems). Hope this helps, and if you have any questions, my emails unlocked, just take off the .nospam off of it. Good luck. P.S. You may also want to replace th axle seals, especially if it has been sitting awhile and theres any sign of rust towards the exposed axle.

Haven't really looked at my oil filter so can't comment on that. As to the brake seals I have a DC with a seep but after reading about the amount of work to replace the seal I am living with it. For DCs after 5601106 and I believe for S after 5600001 (coincident with the introduction of live PTO and dual disk brakes) the manual for brake seal includes the top cover removal etc. That may explain why other haven't mentioned it.

Thank you dug, and paul for the information. I started tearing it apart today , but got pulled off of it for another job. This will be a good thing, I'll get to learn more about what makes it tick.
Thanks Agian , jstpa
