Hello,

I have a diesel Case 1194 I bought used a year ago and I'm wondering what oil to put in there for the winter. The manual reccomends Case HDM oil for just about any temperature, or the standard 30, 20W or 10W for warm, cold, or very cold conditions. Any ideas on a substitute multi viscocity oil (I was thinking 15W-40) or is this a bad idea? What makes this HDM oil have such a wide temp range?

Thanks for any advice,

Paul

I am a very firm believer in using series 3 multi-grade oil, which includes Shell Rotella. Tractor supply also sells a good quality Fleet oil in 10W30 and 15W40. These oils are formulated for all engines up turbocharged diesels. I use Rotella in everything from my lawn mowers up my 900 diesel, even in new overhauls. Most common cause of oil consumption in any engine is dirt and deposits accomulating in the engine. The cleaning agent in HD oils keep these deposits in suspension and is removed by the filter and when the oil is drained for change. Best to drain the oil when hot after a good workout. More frequent changes may be required the first couple of changes as the oil cleans the engine... Gene

I think the Shell Rotella is a good oil for diesels. I know people that use it in their diesel pickups. Some auto parts stores sell it in 5 gal. containers. I've never used it in a diesel tractor.
