I am going to replace the sleeves, pistons and so forth to rebuild a 188D on a 580CK. Have you ever heard of anyone scoring the sleeves and shattering them to get them out rather than using a puller? Doesn't sound like the greatest idea, but I am trying to do this rebuild in my home garage and as inexpensively as possible so I am considering it. I would appreciate any advise.

On my 830 I tried a hyd. jack, works on trucks I was told, I lefted the tractor. We set the loader and 4020 on front and lifted all.
Had an disk made to fit sleeve, used threaded rod and pull sleeves easy.

Andy,

188 is a wet sleeve engine usually pull quite easily. People that want to break sleeves should not be working on engines!

Andy, Andy:
That's a rude reply! Were all friends here and like to learn easy, efficient ways to work on engines. The question is reasonable... what good is a used sleeve? May as well break it if nothing else gets damaged. I've removed and replaced a broken 800D wet sleeve that had freeze damage. The crack made it easy to further break it up with a chisel. That's why the guy sold it cheap. Have you ever removed a cracked vehicle windshield? Its a lot faster and easier if you break it out, unless you have the specialized tools used by the pros same consideration here.

Jim,

Unless I misread his post , he said he didn't think it was a good idea to break them. That leads me to think there is someone in the back ground that suggested the idea and that's the one that I think shouldn't work on engines.

I have never worked on that new of a Case but on a dry sleeve I have many times welded vertical beads on them and shrunk them and then they fall out.

Just be careful that no welding residue lands on the rod journals or anything else important.

On a wet sleeve I usually use a block of wood and a big hammer from the bottom.
