I started my '69 580 ck (188 diesel) today for the first time this winter. It took some cranking to start it, but it started. I let it sit and idle for about 1/2 hour before I tried to move it. I knew the shuttle shift would be slow, but it finally engaged. The trouble is that I couldnt get the engine to go much above idle speed no matter how far open the trottle was. The engine seemed to want to speed up, but labored to do so and threw more black smoke from the exhaust. It seemed to to starving for air(?)

Air temp was not too bad (about 32 F, if that's helpful.

Any thoughts as to why it isn't responding?

It ran fine no more than a few weeks earlier.

Thanks.

Thanks very much for the quick and correct responses. The problem was ice in the air filter. Washed it out and replaced with fresh oil diluted slightly/ diesel and she ran perfectly. This is the most helpful forum that I could imagine.

I have had 3 occasions of water collecting in the air filter cup and freezing, shutting off most of the air... Gene

You might want to check the oil in your air cleaner bowl. If it is too thick for the cold (like SAE 30), the engine may not be able to breathe enough to run above idle. Just my thought anyway.

I really dont have a sure answer but a couple of thoughts. When I get one started in cold weather, as soon as it gets oiled up I run it up to 1/2 throttle to let things warm up. Sometimes the oil bypass circuits wont ever close at idle. As far as starving for air, I've had birds nest in the intake. Ice in a filter or line will cause definite throttle problems.
