My old VAC is acting up again, I guess the Old One does not appreciate sitting in the cold. While checking the spark plugs I noticed that plugs 1 - 4 seem in better shape that than plugs 2 -3 who are fouled with oily sooth. I'm not much of a mechanic but I'm sure that this means something. Any hints ?
Happy holidays to all !

Bob: As the other postrs indicate it may be time for an overhaul. Have you tested the compression..will bet 2-3 are much lower than 1-4. (If you do the test make sure engine was warmed up). If 2-3 are lower try putting some gear oil in each spark plug hole then test again...if readings improve it is most like worn/broken rings...
The hotter plugs will help for awhile and if you aren't working her hard she will probably run along time.

If the plugs are oily, your getting oil leaking past your piston rings. In addition to the hotter spark plug, you might want to put a bottle of oil treatment in it the next time you change your oil.

Plugs fouling with oily gummy deposits usually indicate worn piston rings. Probably time for overhaul. You probably should use a hotter plug, like Auto-Lite 387 or Champion D21. Standard plug is D16 and for light use, will tend to foul, particularly in cooler weather... Gene
