Hi everyone. I just bought my first tractor,
a '51 Case VAC.
I will be the first to tell you I know almost nothing about tractors except the little bit I
have learned reading these forums the last day or so.
After running the battery down I pulled it out to charge and realized it was a 12 volt battery but the tractor has not been converted to 12 volt
according to the previous owner.
I am guessing the generator or other parts might have been damaged because of the 12 volt battery??
The VAC was starting real easy until the float stuck and it flooded.
I also have a question about the eagle hitch.
Will I be able to use regular 3 point implements with this setup?
thanks,
Bryan

Thanks guys. I will check out my system when
I get back up to the property before I slap the
12 volt back in.

Its good to hear I can use most implements with my eagle hitch. It does have a midle arm but I would not know how to tell if it is the original
eagle arm or something added later.
thanks,
Bryan

The top link arm from case would be a casting with handles in the center on each side. There would be an eagle and casting number. The screws would have straight holes in teh ends ...no ball sockets

Some 3-point implements will hook right up and some won't. The spacing of the pins on the implements is part of the problem. Sometimes they are too far apart to hook to them. Sometimes you can flip one of the pins to the inside on the implement to make it work. If you have the original Eagle Hitch middle arm you may have to use a longer arm for some implements. The original Eagle Hitch middle arms go for big $$$$. You have a tough ole tractor, my dad has had a VAC since 1969 and we have used it alot and it just keeps going.

Check your electrical system out real good. Some peoples' idea of converting to 12v is to merely change the regulator to 12v.

I have seen in numerous situations where a 6v generator would push 12v for years without apparent harm but that is not the way I do it. The starter will take 12v and never be be hurt.

The only part that could be hurt I would think is the regulator and maybe it is 12v already.

Make sure that the battery is hooked up with the ground (+/-) as specified by the regulator, it should have been positive ground originally but most 12v is neg ground.

My email is open if you have other questions.

Jerry

I used 12 volt battery in my VAC for some time. The generator had quit before I changed, I would charge the battery when it went down. Works much better with GM alternator.
The float seems to stick, take apart and cannot find anything, it will then work for a while.
The only 3 point implement that I had a problem with was a Massey mower. Linkage that was to hook under the lift arm to raise the bar would not work with the round lift arms. I removed and added a remote cylinder.
