Hello,

I have had bad luck with batts lately. I have been using Napa 830 Amp/1010CCA 6V batts in series to turn over my machine (2 of them). Lately I noticed that they are over-charging I think....I smell sulphur and hear them bubbling after a small amt of use - AMP meter says 15-17A when running near full throttle. This is too much right? What should be "normal" charge for fully charged batts? I guess my voltage regulator is acting up? Is it the little box on top of the generator? Any ideas what to look for when I open it up? Am I frying my batts - any damage done already? Lastly, if I just went to one battery (a 12V), then what do I have to change....anything besides battery box size and cables??? Thanks in advance!

Hey John: How old are them batteries? For 2 of them big 6's, I think they'd suck up 20Amps like a sponge. If you have old, shorted batteries, they will boil. 2 Group 31, 12V, 1000CCA @ 0 degrees F batteries is a much better setup than 2 6's.

15 amps on a charged batery is way to high...should be barely readable on the ammeter Are you sure the batteries are fully charged...What is voltage when shut off...or use a hygrometer.
Regulators do fail...A starter/generator place would be a better bet than trying to adjust it yourself...or buy a new regulator

When we used LAs for serious farm work, they were notorious for overcharging batterys. I imagine the 500s are the same. It was usually a regulator problem and we used to drive with lights on all the time to reduce the problem, but a better fix is a new regulator, or switch to an altenator and 12v
