After much working I was able to get the LA back in the back corner of the shop. This is not an easy task when all the tires have desintagrated and you have know way to steer it! I started disasembly the radiator was full of dirt and mouse crap but it looks to be in great shape. I dont know yet if it will hold water. The engine is seized but I removed inspection covers and bottom end looks really nice. removed valve cover and top end also looks good. Any good tips about un sticking the pistons? I have heard something some were about removing spark plugs makeing an adapter and pumping greese in the holes. Is this a good idea? I could remove the head and probably will but I was just wondering if the greese idea might work. The seat had been removed and the bolts holding the steering case were loose, this combined with the rear pto (or whatever it is hole) beining open on the rear allowed a fair amout of water into the rear end I removed the rear end and top cover and every thing is kind of oily and watery but all seems to turn ok and there are no chips in any gears. I think with a good cleaning everyting will be fine. Any good ideas on how to clean the gear case? Well tommorw is another day and so maybe I can get farther into the tractor. Come monday I think I had better get back to some real work that makes me money. Thats what I like about custom harvesting though you work your but off in the summer but come winter you can have some time to do your own thing. Oh one more questin if I remove the top and bottom tanks from the radiatior are new gaskets available? Thanks

The rear gearcase can be cleaned with Diesel fuel. That's what I used & it worked pretty well. The trany holds 17 gallons of 85W140. I made the mistake of not having enough buckets available when I drained mine:). Remember to remove or loosen the push rods also, they stick real easy on an LA after sitting 20 yrs & I bent half mine when I got the cylinders unstuck. Don Livingston has the radiator gaskets, I just got a great set from him.(just ask for him on this site) Good luck with the cylinders!

DC Tom told me about the hyd trick some time ago . Then I decided to use 2 hyd hoses one on a cylinder with push one direction and another pushing backward. look carefully in the hand holes at the crank . you will then set up rocking motion by moving the hyd lever back and forth. you must back off the rocker arms to do this but its a god idea to do that any way as l&la were bad about having stuck valves in my experience

You could try what I did with my stuck LA. Concentrate your efforts one the pistons that look good. The four hand holes allow ample access to the bottom of the block. Get inside and dis-connect the better looking pistons and work to get them to move up and out of the way of the crank shaft. Depending on which pistons can be moved you may be able to rotate the crank away from the remaining connecting rods. This will allow less resistence from the hard-stuck pistons as you hammer a block of wood from the top. Of course use plenty of penetrate.

I use hydralic pressure, have a spark plug end welded to a pipe nipple and screw on to hose from another tractor and pump oil in not as messy as grease and most of the time engine will come loose, be carefull if you use a new tractor with 2000# of pressure i allways use my old case d withabout 1200# and it works good, have broke a lot of em loose with this method tom

I don't believe I would try grease it might make a hole on it owns with all the pressure from the grease being pumped in there. Try marvel mystery and desiel and brake fluid.

I have never used the grease gun trick on a tractor but it works great on a motorcycle. Grease guns put out hugh amounts of pressure that can really push hard and smoothly on a piston. Make sure that you pull the pushrods first so that the valves are closed.

I cannot imagine how many tubes of grease it would take on a LA but I have stuck 2 tubes in a motorcycle. Sometimes takes a little patience waiting for cylinders to unfreeze.

I like having them freed up so that a guy and actually see what you are up against when you take the head off.
