I knew the inventor... in reply to Don L., 11-12-2004 13:51:28
Howard Engler... He just died a few years ago. He always said the beauty of the thing was how simple it was. Sealed case so no tampering, was lubricated with oil bronze. They had records of units with miles in the millions and still running...

Hi There-

Was curious if you knew Howie, or Cliff personally. I am a grandson of Howard.

Best,

Randy

Put one my corn planter off a truck to work only when the planter is down. Jacked up the wheel and measurered how far the planter went for a number on the hubometer. Then figured how many acres planted per mile on the meter. Works great.

Hubodometers are commonly used on semi trailers to record their mileage which otherwise is hard to keep track of it they regularly get pulled by different tractors. The attach to the center of the wheel hub. The outer hub spins with the wheel and the center does not due to gravity and an offset weight on the inner mechanism.

Gotta admit though that I have never seen one on a farm tractor or implement.

Very common in road transport.

New Zealand uses them extensivley for working out the road tax (or so I believe). The more k's your trailer does the more you pay (IMO a very fair system)
We have them here in Australia on every trailer (trucks that is, not private).

My cousin's Great Plains no-till bean drill has a device that measures the acres planted but it is not a hubodmeter. It is similar and is connected to the drive wheel. We use it to calibrate lbs of seed to the acre when adjusting the slot width of the seed drop.

Sounds like it fits on the "hub" and measures the miles traveled. Although this thing may have measured in feet instead of miles. I've seen something similar mounted on the hubs on large trucks.
