Should a 1949 SC be positive or negative ground? Mine is positive grounded and starter turns over ok. Single wire alternator is not wired and is labled negative ground. What happen if leads are swapped?

Starter motor doesn't care about +/- ground. I assume you have a magneto...if so switch your battery terminals before you hook up the alternator...it will care (at least the internal regulator will) about +/- grounding.
