What is one to do when there is gasoline in your crankcase? Where is it leaking from. How to fix it? Thanks

This happened to me once. The float in the carburator stuck . This allowed the fuel to fill up the intake manifold , up to the heads and drained down the oil ports into the crankcase. I rebuilt the carb ,with a new float and hav'nt had any more problems.

Backfireing sounds more like an electical problem, like timming or points. The way I found my carb trouble was to take the breather tube off at the carb and set a small soup can at the carb opening and see if any fuel come out of the carb overnight. Im sure there are a lot of better and more technical ways to do this check, but this is my , "low cost, farmer, shade tree machanic " method. LOL!!!. Doug

Well, it seems that some "backfiring" could be caused by a sticking float.

As best I recall, some "backfiring" occurs when unburnt fuel is ignited in the exhaust pipe, which could be caused by a rich condition.
