I have a 1945 VAC someone is running it with negative ground 6 volt, It has a generator with I assume a cut out (small Box) I'm not sure if the genrator is original or not..

Someone on here talked about a Neg. and Positve Generator how do you tell the difference??

Also is it ok to run this tractor this way??

Bunky

Your tractor will run either way although it was originally + ground. The only component of an old point type electrical system like a VAC uses that is polarity sensitive is the cutout relay. There is no easy way to change the polarity of the cutout. You'll have to polarize the generator also.

Usually the cutout will be marked which type ground it is - if not you might have to go to the manufacturer with the part no or buy a new one.

The only other change that needs to be done is to interchange the wires on the amp gauge and to make sure that the wire from the coil to distributor is wired up to the post that is the same as the intended ground. The tractor will run without any of these last 2 changes done but your amp gauge will show a discharge when it is charging and the coil will not have as much potential when wired wrong.

Hope this helps. Jerry

It's supposed to be positive ground with only a cut out. I think it's OK to run it that way. Does the ammeter needle go the right direction? I think it's on some of the voltage regulator equipped tractors that polarity matters.

Well the ammeter doesn"t seem to work I just wanted to make sure that it was alright to run it this way..

If I ever get it running right I will probably convert it to 12 volts...
