You should be able to tell if the manifold gasket is leaking around the intakes by spraying a flamable fluid around the gasket area with the tractor running. If it's leaking the RPM's of the engine should change. You checked the push rods to make sure they weren't bent didn't you? Did you replace the condenser when you replaced the points? I once bought a new condenser that was bad. The tractor spit and sputtered at idle.

Well I haven"t checked the push rods yet but this weekend when I put on the new valve cover gasket I will... Is bent pushrods a problem with the VAC??? checking the pushrods was mentioned before..

I think I was the one that mentioned it before. No, bent push rods is not a common problem with the VAC. I have a Case 300 that had the oil filter stem missing like you did and as a result the head wasn't oiling properly. I also had a bunch of bent push rods. I don't know whether the lack of lubrication for the rocker arms could have caused the push rods to bend or not?

Does it run rough at an idle and also at higher rpm's? I had a similar problem, but only at higher rpm's. I hosed the carb out twice and it cleared up. The second time I concentrated on the "equalizing" ports on the inside surface of the throat.

I've also seen a lot of guys on this site talk about the float adjustment on the MS carbs.

Classic symptoms of a vacuum leak.

Sounds like the needle valve could be sticking. Next time it happens tap on the side of the carb when it is running to see if it makes any diference. Did you put any kind of filter in the fuel line to keep dirt from coming from the fuel tank?
