580 CK gas engine trouble

I've got a '70 580 CK that has a 159 gas engine. It's got about 1400 hours on it. When it is just sitting there idling, it runs rough and it smokes quite a bit. When I increase the RPM it smooths out and it stops smoking. Also when I'm driving on the road and after I've went up a steep hill, a while later it starts sputtering and finally dies. Let it set a few seconds and it fires right up. I thought it might be a fuel problem but there is plenty of fuel getting to the carb. I'm considering rebuilding the carb. I've installed electronic ignition, and checked the timing. I did find the crankcase vent tube plugged solid a while back and got it cleared. It was running a lot better but now it's doing it again and this tube isn't plugged. I'm even wondering if maybe something is worn out in the head. I always add lead substitute to the unleaded gas but maybe this stuff doesn't work. I'm at my wits end. Please help.

Question: How did you check the timing? I have a 70 something 580 as well. When I open the port that has the timing marker, all I can see is fluid on the flywheel that obscures the timing marks.

Did you have to drain the transmission to set the timing?

Sounds like you've got a seal leaking. There shouldn't be any oil there. Find the 30 degree before top dead center mark on the flywheel. I usually mark it with a soapstone so it shows up easier with the timing light. Run the engine at 2000 R.P.M. Rotate the distributor until the 30 degree mark lines up with the pin in the timing hole. Lock down the distributor and check timing again to be sure it didn't move. That should be it.

Regarding the smoking, it's probably the oil rings on the pistons that are worn out or stuck to the pistons. Was the tractor parked for a long time before you got it? Ever have the valve cover off, are the return oil ports open? As far as the other problem, I'm not convinced that you aren't getting some rust moving around in the fuel tank that shuts the fuel off. Does it have a sediment bowl mounted on the bottom of the fuel tank? I had a tractor with similar problems. The nipple that screwed into the tank at the top of the sediment bowl was full of rust.
