O.k. Case men, here's another question for you! I own an 830 diesel dual-range, and am trying to figure out what size moldboard plow to buy for it. The factory literature all seems to explain that this is a five bottom size tractor, but it seems to me that four 16's are a more likely match. The area of Michigan where I live, central lower, is primarily some heavier soils with the clay percentage varying widely, but it is definitely not a sandy region. Most farmers I know use around a 100 hp tractor on five bottoms. Would you tend to agree that four 16's are a better match for my tractor, and that the factory rating is rather optimistic for my local conditions?

Well I haev used a 3/16 JD mounted on my 830 here in southern wisconsin. It had a wide front on it too. Lets just say when you have to steer with the brakes because its under some much pull in the heavy soil a 2 bottom would have been better match.I agree with Glen alot of people are fooled by what the manual says. I would love to know where they pplowed to beable to use that size of plow behind a 830. We pull 4/16 case semi mount behind our 930's. They have fun sometimes too . Lots of good clay soil here. If you have 3 point on your tractor find a nice 3/14 fully mounted plow weight the nose of the tractor down and have fun.
Later Bob

I have a 930 dual range and found 4 x 14 to max out the tractor in 2nd gear low range when plowing hay land. The soil is heavy soil and the hay land had been unworked for years.

Here's a differt slant for an answer to your question... I have a 830 Gas COM and a 800 Diesel COM here in Southeast Michigan. Soil is highly variable, yellow sand to heavy clay. Have a set of Semi-Mount Case 16" and a set of Oliver 16" Trailer type. The 800 Diesel will outpull the 830 Gasser with either plow set. The Oliver set pulls faster and deeper with either Tractor compared to the Case plows. I certainly prefer the 800 Diesel with the Olivers. Also less fuel cost. But the COM is mandatory due the the soil variability. Never have been able to plow at 5MPH average.

hello glen. i grew up driving an 830 case-o-matic. started driving at 5 years old. we always pulled 4-16s and it went fairly well in our soils that veried from gravelly sand to grey clay. i think in sand you could pull 5 bottoms, but not in heavy soils.

Bring it to our place. We pulled a mounted Case 3 14's plow with our Case o matic 830. It had its hands FULL.

Wow! Where I'm from in Ohio we didn't even bother plowing parking lots. They usually don't yield very well anyway;-)

Call me ornry if you want but I'm gettin' a little tired of people's "fish stories" of how many plows their tractor will pull. People's reports are simply outrageous! Reports of 50-60 hp tractors pulling 4 plows are laughable to me. As I say, bring 'em on up! The BIG stories will all be over. That's my story and I'm sticken' to it! Glenn FitzGerald

I didn't mean to insinuate that you weren't telling the truth. My uncle pulls 3-14s with his 830 in clay ground and it's a nice match - not too hard on the tractor, not wasting too much time because the plow's too small.

That is in some relatively poor ground, though. Which leads me to my point - while I fully believe that you have ground that's worse, I'm not sure I'd want to farm it.

I don't know, does it yield well? Then, I guess if you pay less for the ground it doesn't have to yield as good either.

Here in N.E. Kansas, you need 20 pto horsepower per each 16" bottom you want to pull at 5 mph. An 830 is a strong 3 plow tractor here.

4-16 model CHA to go with the 830's is what Dad & uncle Bob each bought back in '62 here in NC Iowa, that's enough plow around here. If you did have sandy ground, you might get away with pulling 5 bottoms. I think the sales literature stretched things a little.

I know of an 830 that pulled 6-16s, keep in mind it will take some modifications. 1st and m&w turbo kit. 2nd you take a smaller wheel and mount on the inside of your furrow wheel so that it rides up on the land. 3rd outside dual. 4th all the weights you can find 4th turn the pump up
5. watch the other brands tuck tail and run
