Hello all, I was just wondering if when I put new rings on existing sleeves and pistons if I can get oversize rings or if it is normal to just use standard size rings. I do not think oversize rings are available because my parts catalogues only list standard size. Help is appreciated. Thanks in advance- Josh Kelnhofer

If the ring grooves are worn in your pistons, you can get wider rings, and have the grooves trued up in the pistons to make a tight fit with the wider rings.

The problem with oversized (in diameter) rings is that, when used in a worn bore, the bore wears more at the top than lower down, and if you file the oversized rings to fit near the top, wear the wear is greater, they will jamb in the bore lower down.

Dave Reed can advise you further, and help with custom or specialty rings.

I would think I could get oversizes yet, like .005, .010 over. Not all apps, but some. I have done it before. Don L.

I have not seen any of the "wear" oversize rings you refer to available for tractors. The good thing is that our old tractors have low compression ratios and pressure, so a ring end gap above spec does not cause problems. There is a slight power loss possibly, but they will start well and run without smoking with out of spec end gap.

You must use the size rings that fit the pistons and sleeves. You can't use oversize rings unless you have oversized pistons and sleeves.

Thanks, I was just wondering if maybe you could get them .010 or .020 over like you can rod bearings. I guess that's what I meant by "oversize".
