I went to take the rocker shaft off my VAC and the center bolt was loose and half the threads were gone, Has anyone else experienced this???

I think to fix it I'm gonna put a stud in there and just use a nut on the top.. Anyone else have any idea's??

The rocket arm fasteners were probably not torqued properly and the motion of the rocker arms worked the center surport loose. Bolts are used in this type assembly because they are still captured in the bore by their length and the valve cover above. Nuts can unthread and fall off into moving parts. Note there are bolts at each end and the center. The 3 studs pass through the valve cover and nuts are not a problem. The bolt you need is common 3/8"x 2-3/4" nc. Rocker arm fastner torque is 20 ft lb.

The oil passage for top deck lubrication is up through the center support. If the fastners were loose there may have been some starvation in the valve running gear and center/aft cam brg.

I would think that should work. I might do something to make sure the nut doesn't vibrate loose, like putting Lock-tite on it.

On a related matter, check to make sure there is a small hollow stem that goes from the filter housing up into the filter. Sometimes they come out and get thrown away with the filter. If this stem is not in place, your head will not lubricate properly.
