Just bought a 73 580CK (not running). There is a part missing from the engine, just under the alternator (air intake side of the engine looking forward) there is about a 3" round hole with 3 tapped holes around the outside to mount something. When you look in the hole, you can see gears which appear to be at the front of the crank shaft. The hole appears to be part of the case that houses the water pump and stuff as you can see where water would be flowing through this area. It is not the starter, that is mounted to the back of the engine. I have the complete service manual and don't see any mention of any component in this area. any help would be appreciated, can send pictures.

Looks like you have a missing power steering pump

Andy, I am not familiar with your engine but older Case engines often run hydraulic pumps off the gear train.

Pumps are generally used for low capacity live hydraulic applications like power steering that may have been an option.

If the tractor is sold without the option it will have a cover. If the pump is removed later you can fabricate an opening cover or sometimes buy one.

Click on the link for an example of a cover that will fit many Case engines.
