I have not worked on a 400, but the 500s have two different head castings and there are two different gaskets for them. Since the early 400 was 2/3 of a 500 engine, the same situation may exist. Check the casting numbers on your heads and use a Case parts book to check. Good luck.

Hey Peter: I'll bet you are using aftermarket gaskets. I had the same trouble. After 2 tries to get the correct ones, they told me I didn't know what I was talking about. Had to get the correct gaskets from CASE.

put head gaskets on 3 400s with the 6400 block-----got all gaskets from IH dealer and all went well---the same gaskets work on gas and diesel
