730 muffler

I have a 730 gas tractor that I recently purchased with a stuck engine. Having freed it up, I have run it with a striaght pipe temporarily installed because there was no muffler. Not wishing to have my ear drums assaulted by the bark of the engine, I am looking to purchase a new muffler. The issue I have run into is that there appears to have been two different types of mufflers used on the 730 and 830 series Cases. The first style must have been used through 1962 when the hood height was raised; the second style lasting until the end of 30 series production. The early muffler has a long, slender shell with a short outlet extension, while the later version has a shorter, larger diameter shell and a longer outlet. Since this 730 is a very early production 1960, I would like to buy an original style muffler which would differ from the one on my '63 830. I am not finding the early muffler available from Stanley, TSC, or NAPA. Did Case discontinue the first style of muffler when the later one came out? The 730/830 has a 2 1/2" dia. exhaust manifold, so the 700/800 series would not fit as they were 2 1/4". I am interested to learn if any of you have run into this yet. Thanks

How did you get it unstuck? I take it it wasn't stuck too bad.

My uncle used to use mufflers like you're talking about on his 770 Olivers. I believe he got them from the Oliver/White dealer. You may want to try other brands dealers and get something "close" to what you're looking for. Have you tried a search for "tractor mufflers" or "tractor exhaust" on the web like Yahoo??? I've seen some on ebay as well selling mufflers for Case tractors. Good luck

The engine was stuck from sitting for 10+ years, and some water had gone down the exhaust manifold, rusting #2 and #3 cylinders. It was seized to the point that a 3 foot prybar working against the flywheel ring gear wouldn't budge it. I freed by soaking the cylinders for two days in automatic transmission fluid. It broke free right away after the soaking, by just working the engine back and forth a little more each direction with the prybar. After freeing the pistons, two exhaust valves were sticking, but a bit more effort and some WD-40 also loosened them.

Well, I didn't really find much internal engine rust other than what had occurred in the cylinders. The valve train was in very good condition when I pulled the valve covers off. There was a bit of water that drained out of the crankcase when I first removed the plug, but not enough to where the crank journals would have been exposed to it. I did put about a gallon of diesel fuel into the oil pan and let it soak for a day to help flush out any contamination that had settled there. Any remaining rust was worn off the cylinders in the first minutes of running it. The tractor only smoked for the first little bit, and now the exhaust has no trace of oil burning. I checked all over the internet today, but no answers came up about the muffler. I think that the next step is to ask the dealer. I live in the center of Michigan, near Lansing.
