I am restoring a couple of 52-54 DC-4's. I believe most later models came with 12-38 rears and 600-16 fronts. Right? What was the original brand? Firestone or Goodyear? Does anyone know of a good REASONABLE source for something close to the originals?

Camboted, The motors were shiped from the factory, complete, less head and pan. The cranks broke beteen #4 and the rear main, broke rear main housing out of block. When they but the #3 block in said they were through, no more warrenty. traded it off. had "400", 930D, 970D,1570,that I still have and use(loader, shredder, spreyer)a 4690,thatI traded for a 846 FORD in 1990. The Tires were 13x38 GOOD-YEAR SURE-GRIPS DC is still the worst tractor I have ever owned.!!! Dale In Tx.

The build cards on my 1939 and 1940 DC-4's both say they had Firestone tires installed on them when shipped from the factory. 36 inch rear tires on the 1939, and 38 inch rears on the 1940. I don't know what they were installing on the later models, but both of my early models came with Firestones.
Hope that helps some.

My great uncle bought a DC4 new in 1953 and it had to have been the best tractor we ever had. My dad bought it from him and it and a 1942 SC that my dad bought new and we still own did all of the till work on 600 acres until my dad retired in 1981. To my knowledge and my dad's memory the motor was never apart. I did tighten up the rods on it once thru the side of the pan. Regretfully it was sold at auction and lost track of that same year.

Your's had to have had a major problem that a good mechanic should have been able to read and fix because DC's as a rule were very solid dependable tractors.

Thanks Dale! That's the worst DC horror story I've ever heard! Did they replace the entire block or just put in new cranks? It sounds like an allignment problem. I've heard of breaking cranks on M&W pistons but never anything like this.

tires were for the most part 12*38's ... as far as breaking cranks in lpg dc's it was quite common. We got case to pay all repair costs and line bored them and they were pretty solid after that plus retarding the spark about 3 degrees as I recall. That was 3 degrees from where we determined the motor produced the best hp..not factory setting. My all time favorite tractor was a DC propane with the already propane head milled another 125 thousands and a truck air cleaner installed. It would spank a 400 of any fuel type and had about as much hp as your average 500 diesel far more than an 800. Funny never did break this tractors crank...but did put in a second head gasket and set the timing back some..then it would only smoke the 400's.
biggest repair bill was for the bendix spring in the starters...took two big 6 volt batteries to start it. When the motor was hot ... had to hand crank it along with the starter to get it running or pull it.
