Hi All.

I'm trying to attack my first hydraulic cylinder rebuild; the hydra-leveling cylinder on my '64 530CK. I built a spanner wrench and got the packing gland off okay but I can't get the rod/piston out. It came out about 5 inches and just won't move any more.

I finally removed the whole cylinder and brought it home. I made a jig with some pipes and a 4x4 and tried pulling it apart with my come-along but all I get is a lot of crackling wood. Am I missing something?

Did you use the hydraulics on your tractor to force it out?

No. First of all, since it is the hydra-levelling cylinder there isn't a valve that controls it directly. I certainly wish that I had a manual pump that I could have hooked it up to and just slowly pushed it out.

As it turns out, I hooked it back up to my jig and ignored the cracking sounds. It finally gave up and started coming out nice and easy.

Now all I have to do is get the nut off! ;-)

Mike, the nut will typically be torqued to 500-600 ft lbs. Best to use an impact wrench as opposed to a 10' cheater.
