Will an SC Run this Generator?

I'm considering buying a PTO driven 13,000 watt generator. The generator specs. say that I need 24 PTO horsepower and 540 RPM to produce the 13,000 watts. I'm thinking about mounting the generator on a platform on the back of a 1949 Case SC. I just rebuilt the engine, but it still has the 3.5 inch pistons. How much will I have to open the throttle up to produce 540 RPM's at the PTO?

And depending on what you're powering, sometimes the frequency (60 HZ) is more important than the voltage. To get 60 HZ you're going to have to be pretty much right on the mark of 540 PTO RPM. Voltage should be within range at that speed, as long as you're not exceeding the capacity of the generator.

Ebbsspeed, you're absolutely right on the frequency comment. By the same token, if you overload the SC the frequency will drop and some load will have
to be removed. I however am quite certain it will
not be a problem.

The dyno book listed it at 614RPM at 1760 engine RPM and 541 at 1600, full load.

We run alternators all the time in Cambodia, We must have close to 50 of them, all the way from 3KW to 45KW, I am sure that your stock SC should run the 13KW. Unless you've played with the governor, I believe I'd just run it wide open. When you come under full load you will pull the engine down some, and remember you will only max out the power requirement when you are under full load. Do you plan to utilize the entire 13KW all or most of the time? Also, what are you running? Unless the machine is extremly voltge sensitiive you shouldn't have any problem. The suggestion of a volt meter is a good one. Just run it up to about 125 volts and you should handle any power surges. In Cambodia we can buy a currency modulator for about $50 that would give a constant voltage output over a wide range of rpm's. You may want to check to see if you can buy one of these on ebay.

Most of these old tractors had a rated load speed of 150RPM lower than wide open. That would make the SC run 540PTO at 1400RPM. We know that some tractors had a higher PTO speed of 650. I will check our dyno book Sat. and see if it's listed there. Dad's generator has a voltage meter on it to check what it's doing.

Thanks for the input. I probably don't need any more than 8,500 watts, but the 13,000 watt one is the smallest PTO powered generator that I have found. It may not be very economical to run the SC wide open to get the 540 RPM's and 60 hertz out of it. I have a Case 300 that I could run the generator with. I figure it has a higher PTO RPM without having to open it wide open. The only problem is, I usually am using the 300 for other things in the Winter. I could put the generator on the back of the SC and leave it there all Winter, so that I would be ready for a power outage.
