I am a new farmer and have to put in the winter rye grass. I am using a 1973 Case 55 tractor to pull a disc with 4 arms of 5 discs. I am new at this and am wondering if there is a source that explains from beginning to end how to disc a field (what angles to put the discs, how deep to disc, how to set up the disc, how to weigh it down). Any ideas?

Amy,
I am no farmer, but maybe I can help. Is this new, unbroken ground, or has it been plowed? If not plowed, you really need a Rome disc and a large tractor or dozer. If plowed, what you have will be fine. I would angle all the disc gangs as far as they will go. As far as weight, I have seen engine blocks and anything imaginable used for weight. Use whatever you have that will stay on with minimal tying. I always thought you should disc in as high a gear as possible, but remember that a disc pulls a lot harder than you may think. It is more trial and error than anything. For rye grass, though, you don't need to go that deep, you may be better off to set the disc gangs straight. If you go 1/2" to 3/4" deep that should be more than enough. Just as long as you get the ground broken nicely. You can go across, around in circles, figure-eight, whatever it takes to get it broken as small and powdery as possible. For lawns, I usually go in a figure-eight, but for that I want it to be like dust. It just takes time to figure out what you want it to look like, and what works best.
I hope this helps. I figured since all the other replies could only argue about what kind of tractor you have, I would see if I could help. Good luck!

Thanks for all of the advice. You guys sound like pros. My mom just died suddenly (car accident) and left behind her Case 55 (this is what is painted on the tractor, so I thought it was a valid description). We have to get the rye grass in. In the past, she's done a light discing, and sown the seed. But a soil analysis told her she needed lime. We were also told that we had to disc a little more aggressively, a little deeper, to properly incorporate the lime. All this planting is being done in southern Mississippi.
To shed a little light on the tractor & equipment: the Case has a front loader. I am told it's a series 996? There are 4 arms of 5 discs each on the disc. It looks normal. I don't know what a 3-point hitch is...It's finally raining here after a long drought, so the soil is coming up. The rain coupled with the weight on the discer is making things churn. We put large logs on and cement block on today. ONce the field is seeded, how long before we can move the cows over? Also, can I lime and sow seeds at the same time? Is there a chemical problem? Thanks!

If possible put the lime on and till it into the ground. Alite coat of fertilizer would help too.

As far as letting the cattle on it, wait till it is established before you turn them out. Still would like to see a picture of your tractor. Or, see if you can find a serial number plate and let us know the numbers. This will help identify the unit. The three point is most likely what you have your disk connected to. Two arms coming out from the tractor which connects to the disc and one arm comes out from the top and connects to the top part of the disk which allows you to raise and lower the disk.

Okay, I'll try to get a photo of the tractor tomorrow, but I have another question. Should we have plowed the field before discing? I notice that some people plow first. But, like I said before, my Mom only lightly disced and then sowed the rye see with a little red clover seed and some kind of black fertilizer.

Please excuse my ignorance about farming and tractor issues. I am learning. Thanks!

Dale, no one is argueing whatsoever. It is difficult to tell a person how to disc, been there done that many times, when you aren't sure what she has to work with.

First of all, what is a Case 55? Used to farm with Case and never seen or heard of a 55. What type of disk do you have? Sounds like a small unit mounted a on the three point hitch. Is there any way to post a picture?

I wonder if she meant Case 155.

Thought about that too but don't think the the 155 would ever handle even the garden tractor discs.
