Just curious, how do these tractors compare in there components? For example rear axel diameter, transmission gear sizes, crankshaft sizes, clutch size, etc.? Then the M vs. DC? How did these two compare? I am not wanting horsepower/performance info. Thanks, Glenn FitzGerald

Hey Glenn: CASE was using tapered roller brgs. throughout the tranny & differental of their tractors while IH was still using ball brgs. The balls would fall out of the axle brgs & get under the bull gear & bang; a big hole in the bottom on the housing.

You're asking some tough questions. I cannot find anything on axel sizes. All I know is that the Case axels are larger and much stonger. I've seen several M's an H's with broken axels but never a DC or an SC with one. Also, the clutches were stonger. The over the center hand operated oil clutch was pretty bullet proof. Both the H and M had dry single disc clutches that went out periodically. I know that the DC had an 11 inch oil clutch for the hand operated version and went to a 12 inch oil for the foot clutch, which didn't seem to hold up as well, I imagine since they did not have that pressure from the over the center operation. Sorry, I'm not much help on the actual statistics.

I have two H's and 4 Sc's with an SC puller in the works. I have had about every piece imaginal apart on both. The SC is much heavier and it is hard to get in a class to match up with an H. My stock '54 weighs 4600# without me. No weights, or fluid and nothing removed to lighten it. It puts out 31hp on the dino with 3 5/8 aluminum button top pistons and and slightly milled 5617 head. The cranks are similar. The SC may be a little heavier. The H has 1/4" more stroke. I haven't beat one yet in antique stock class. Transmission s on the SC have heavier gears and bearings. The H has a weakness in the 5th gear area. The bearing that rides in the input shaft is too small and is subject to early failure and takes out 5th first and then 4th gear if not fixed right away when you notice trouble. I like the H for its speed vs the SC but I don't worry about hurting the SC on a tough pull. The H was my Dad's tractor and has a loader on it. We tested a factory stock SH with low hours on the dino and it cranked out 37hp. I didn't think they were that strong. If you need to replace bearings or gears, give me an SC anytime.

I don't see how your SC is going to be a competitive puller unless you lighten it some more. Does it still have the 150 pound weight in the front? If you can find a set of the old pressed steel wheels, that would probably help alot.

My '54 is as it was purchased. It does have the front weight. I have pulled it a couple of times to see what it would do. I won't remove things from it just to go pulling. I have a '44 that has button top 3 11/16 pistons with the 5617 head that I am putting together. I plan on sheading the motor lift and replacing the pto and rear end cover with S parts. I will leave the front weight out, use '41 front wheels, and sheading the generator and battery. The swinging drawbar will go too, along with the foot rests. That should get me in the 4200 range or less. Fenders will be missing also. I should be in the 35 hp range. I will have to test it and see.

Super H with 37 horsepower factory...? Pretty impressive. That's the most I've heard of but haven't hung in IH circles much! Didn't a regular H have about 20 hp drawbar and 24 hp pto? Thanks, Glenn F.

My data book says the standard H has 27.5 pto hp and the SH has 34.61
