730 breaks

The breaks on my 1966 730 (741) have been bad for years. But now with my kids around the yard and having a loader mounted in it I want to get this put-off problem fixed before winter.

Is this something I can do "under the shade tree" or should I spring for a service call?

I live in Wisconsin and use this tractor to plow snow in the winter, and general yard work the rest of the year, as I quit farming in 1993.

My Dad bought this tractor new, has about 3600 hours on it, was shedded all of it's life, and I hope to restore it someday.

Mikey,

When you have it apart, replace the actuating balls between the spreader plates with balls that are 1/16 inch larger. You'll be surprised how this helps. These are available at most bearing suppliers.

Give us a call @ 920 295 3278, we have most of what you may need here. There are quite a few parts we check when we do brakes on these that make a lot difference in final performance. Dale

Sorry, forgot about the adjusting nut. You could try to tighten them up a bit. It didn't work for me, but you may get lucky. There is an adjusting on top of the "drums" that you could try to turn. If I remember right, all that is required is a 3/4 wrench.

I'd say fix it. It isn't hard to do and they're still available from the dealer. It cost me right around $100 to do both sides. It's been a little over two years ago since I did it, so they may be a little higher now.

I remember doing that with a friend who worked for a Case dealer in the back shop (now out of buessness) back in 1980. That was the last time anything was done to these brakes.

At 25 years between brake jobs you may even have a speck of rust or two on the actuating balls. I had trouble with the right brake grabbing a year or so after I replaced the discs. Shined those balls back up and that helped, but it still does it every once in a while.Good luck.
