I have a 1974 870. No turbo or powershift. I've been mowing some pretty thick grass & weeds the past week with a John Deere 513 mower deck. Even in the lowest gear, I've been going through quite a few shear pins and I was thinking today that J.D. rated this mower deck for tractors "up to 70 h.p." I'm wondering just what was the real N.T.T.'s rateing for this tractor? I remember Case claming 80 h.p. but in hindsight, they may have rounded it up some. I'm thinking the true PTO h.p. is somewhere between 73 to 78 h.p.

case very rarely over rated the horse power of their tractors. my 830 rated 65 hp does 73 on the dino. my 930 rated aprox. 85 went 115 on the dino my 1370 rated 155 went 200. so your 870 could go over 90 hp very easily.

Hey Mikey: That 870 is no slouch. Don't forget the tremendous torque that 336 is delivering. The Deere mower may stand up to an 80HP Buzz-Buzz engine, but that gutsy 336 engine in the 870 is a whole different ballgame. Are you using a good grade of shear bolt? Grade 5 at least?

I've been getting the shear bolts from a local J.D. dealer. 8.8's

They started out at 71 PTO HP in 1970 and in 1973 they were up to 80 PTO HP, even for manual transmissions.

Hey, thanks, I was 14 years old (GREAT RESPECT here to my father for valuing my opinion at that age as I picked the 870) in 1974 when my dad bought this tractor, and at the time we also looked at a 770 diesel (new), 970 diesel (new), and a used, 1969, 930 gas. Can you tell me what the PTO h.p was on these tractors? Thanks!
