26 total registered in the traction engine registry two others I know of making a total of 28 total known, there is no doupt there is probably more. In Michagan I have two, one is serial number 34641 that is in Howell more than likely owned by the Carl Tuttle the other 29117 unknown location what year are you looking for as there more than likely has been some changes from 1913-1920 closest one next is in in New Jersey. 820 simple traction engines made. 1919 is the least represented left that is 34641 only 49 made that year the lowest of all years represented. 68 simple portable 9 skid boilers 8 skid engines all of those none are known to exist unless you are aware of any more let me know I will add them to the data base. first one made was 28972 closest left known is 28979 in New Jersey last one was 35020, closest left known is 35019 in Calhoun Kentucky another tidbit all those portables, skid boilers and engines were only made in 1913 and 1914 mmost made in one year, 1913 246 total simple traction engines not counting the other misc skid, boiler or portables. thats probably more than you wanted to know.

I have a 12 hp Case steam engine built in 1904. Unfortunately it has no serial number plate. I have wondered how rare these engines are. What is the source of your data?

No serial numbers listed in 1904 for a 12hp, are you quessing or going by the boiler numbers against another in the same vintage with a good serial number plate. listed from 1898-1909 new rating after that I have a rough number of total made including all portables and skid boilers total of 2261 so far I need more time to break that down between compounds and simple traction engines, registered I will need more time to get that together.

Glen, We purchased the Case at an aucton and it was billed as a 1904. The smoke box had been replaced and so, there was no serial number plate. Are there other numbers that might allow us to date this engine? Where are these numbers located? It is certainly a 12 hp case (8.25in x 10in. cylinder).Thanks.

Crawl under the machine and with a mirror look at the casting numbers and the spring pot brakets these are the heavy springs in the rear corner of the boiler if they are cast iron with a number, it is between 1898 and 1903 if they look like they are forged steel it is after 1905. no record exists that there ever was any 12hp made in 1904

break down as follows 12hp 8 1/4x10
Simple traction 1664
Compound traction 436
Compound Portable 58
Simple Portable 166
Skid Boiler 5
Skid Engine 7
Total 2336

Highest number of simples made in one year 431 in 1901 second in 1903 and then none in 1904 maybe had labor problems and stocked up? 1900 had the highest number of compounds made 128 and then went down from there. skid boilers and engines only made in 1906 and 07 I did not include road rollers didnt think it really was what you are looking for

thanks for the information. are there any other casting numbers that might help narrow down the year it was built?
