This will be my first northern WI winter with a 6 volt tractor (Case 300, 1957). The other morning it was cool out, about 40 degrees, and when I started the tractor, I noticed it took a touch longer to start. That got me thinking I might want to add a tank heater of some kind so it will start this winter. Are there some good units out there that will fit? Do I want to keep an extra battery in the house (warm) in case it is needed? Thanks

One of the most important things to do in winter is to put lighter oil in the crankcase. If the tractor is only used for light chores, I would use straight 10W oil or 5W20 multigrade. Will make the engine turn much easier. Might want to check the transmission oil too. 80W90 works well for cold weather... Gene

Hobby Farmer I have the same tractor I added 2/0 welding cable as from my battery to starter connection and from battery to my ground. Got to 17 below and wind at 30mph and the the engine cranked right over and fired right up. Many people could not get there cars started that day.
The 6 volt battery was in the tractor a year and half, the tractor sits outside with a tarp to keep the snow off.

Hey Hobby farmer: A must for good performance on any electrical system is a good battery, proper size battery cables, cables that are not all turned to powder, good clean ends. For a 6V system, I'd go no smaller than 1 guage.

Heaters and a warm battery would be good. A WELL tuned engine is VERY important.
