Here'one for you. I'd like to know if anyone has tried it and lived? A friend of mine, a crew chief on C-130's during the Vietnam war, told me that when they had a very rusted and stubborn manifold nut, they would heat it red hot and then spray it with (get this!) ether (starting fluid). He claims they would then turn it out by hand. Sounds like suicide to me. Anybody ever do it??

That procedure sounds a little wild, but my procedure for bolts that are broke off in cast iron is to weld a nut on top of the stub and, when it loses color, hit it very gently with an impact wrench. I must have done at least 50 like this (most on L and LA radiator tanks), all successful.

sounds like the cold in fluid shrank bolt, only reason it would trun by hand.

Not quite, the closest I ever came was to heat a recalictrant nut red hot and then try to turn it with my fingertips. On a truck or some type of equipment, don't remember. Didn't work. Burned my fingers. Didn't hurt as bad as the time I got myself in the forehead with 16 inch 1/2" drive breaker bar though. My mind used to wander a bit on the job.
