My injector pump has sprang a leak. The service manual refers to a timing hole where the timing pointer points to TDC. Step 6 shows repairman using a screwdriver to crank engine counterclockwise. How do I do this? When I look in the timing hole I see the pointer but can not see flywheel or anything else in which the screwdriver could grip to turn engine.

Step 6 also refers to a data decal on valve cover for specified fuel pump timing, mine is painted over, how do I locate this info?

Step 18 calls for the pump drive shaft to be removed to return to repair shop with pump, is this necessary? That's a lot of work!

Thanks, Mr Ranger

When all else fails (turning the motor to align the timing marks) remove the electric starter and use a small pry bar or large screw driver on the ring gear teeth to turn the motor.
Stateline Diesel in Edwardsburg, MI is a good place for injection pump repair. (269) 663-8571

Roger, I was able to turn the engine over by turning the alternator. There is a large nut that holds the belt pully on and it worked perfect for turning engine. Thanks for the info on where to locate the parts. I was however able to locate a supplier by doing a search on this forum. Ralph's Diesel Service 315-655-3702 out of Cazenovia, NY. Gasket Kit Part #24371.

Thanks, Mr Ranger

Try www.stanadyne.com there is a dealer locator on that site that will lead you to a servicing dealer in your area. If you are inclined to try it yourself, the seal kit is around $30. You can buy a service manual from this site for around $35 (including shipping). I just rebuilt the pump on my 580D two weeks ago with the help of some guys on this site and am very happy with the results. Good luck with your repair.

It took me about 2 hours to remove the pump, rebuild and replace the pump. Not any tougher than rebuilding a Holley or Quadrajet carb.

There is another way. Your engine has an RoosaMaster pump on it. What you can do is on the side of the pump there is an cover that is held on with two screws that take an flat bladed screw driver, pull this cover off. Under the cover you should find a line scrbed into the rear plate. What you have to do now is rotate the engine, this can be done by turning the fan by hand, until the other half of the housing which also has a line scribed on it lines up with the first. With these two lines lined up you can remove the pump. The shaft will stay on the engine. I forgot to say thtat you must wire the throttle lever into the full fuel position. There are two seals on the shaft and you can change them at this time withoput removing the shaft. When you put the pump back on make sure the scribe lines are lined up and that you do not roll the seals on the shaft. DO NOT TURN THE ENGINE OVER WITH OUT THE PUMP ON!! I know this sounds complicated but once you do it, it will be simple.

Thanks Steve, that is encouraging. I tried to rotate the engine with the fan, however it slipped. I'll see if I can tighten it and try again. Any suggestions on a place to rebuild the pump?
