I have a `56 311-B and don't know the horsepower rating. Also having trouble with the governor not wanting to power up if RPM drops due to heavy grass during mowing. Any advise?

You would be well off to check out the timing advance flyweights in the distributor under the points. Many people never think to check them, and I've seen many that were completely worn out or had broken or stretched out springs. What this does is to cause the engine to run at full timing advance (even at an idle) as soon as you start it. While they run ok like this, they run better when proper distributor function is restored. Then the governor and distributor timing work together to provide lots of power at all operating speeds.

try to shorten the throttle rod going to the carb. a little it should make the govener snapper if not try making it longer. it has been a little while sense i adj. one cant remember for sure & it could be your govener has a lot of wear. i would try the adj. & see how that works. let us know how it comes out.

I'm not sure but I was thinking that a 300 was basically just a newer restyled version of a VAC if that is the case, I would doubt that it has over 26-28 hp. If it won't pick up you might hve it overloaded to the point that know matter how far the govenor opens the carb the engine is unable to recover. Maybe you have too big of a mower or you are driving too fast.I can usually pull a five foot bush hog with my VAC but if you have a finish mower on it they pull alot harder than a bush hog.

My copy of the Hotline Equipment Guide doesn't list the "B" Just 311. They used both Cont. & Case diesel engines 32 & 34 hp. The governor is built into the injector pump. Check timing, fuel filters, and also be sure the air breather is clean and air flow is not restricted Good Luck HLS

I have a 1959 311 with a 148 cubic inch gas engine made by Case. I think it is similar to the 311B mechanically. I think it is around 26 horse power. If you have this engine, the governor probably needs to be disassembled and cleaned. As well as I remember, it has some steel balls in it that can sometimes stick. It is a good governor.
