Anyone replaced the seal on the splined shaft coming out of an SC stearing box? Mine leaks. What's involved in the job? Other than rear axel seals, I think this is my last significant leak. Thanks, Glenn F.

On this one the book shows how to adjust the play in the wormgear/shaft assembly but doesn't indicate a seal nor does it say how to take it out. I presume that the worm gear rides in the transmission oil at the top of the transmission case. There must be a seal where the shaft comes out to the link. The adjusting screw for the wormgear is on the right side of the tractor at the other end of the shaft. Hope this helps.

Got it out without too much trouble, Todd. It is a standard steel/rubber seal. I was able to remove it from the outside, in many pieces! I keep thinking, 'this is the last improvement for now' as I must get on to other things. But then I go after another leak and another... All the while the DC (and many other things) patiently wait for me. Oh well...

So can you tell if the worm gear rides in the transmission oil at the front/top of transmission housing? Just curious, had not considered how the gear was lubricated before.

It gets lubed from the transmission somehow as the old seal is soaking wet with #90 gear lube. Before too long both my SC and DC are gonna get the gearbox reworked to remove steering play. Thanks for your responses Todd.
