Many years ago I converted my VAC to 12 volts. I recently had the starter armature turned and since the 12 volt battery had died and I had a 6 volt one on hand I decided to go back to 6 volts. Battery really turns the starter well but "no start." Rolled it down the driveway and wow, it started and ran. Later tried to start it on level ground and "no go" by starter but it fired right off when cranked. (You know, that bent piece of metal that goes in a hole in the front). Then the light dawned, I had not change the coil back to a 6 volt one. Six volts would run the 12 volt coil if you were not cranking the engine with the starter. Put the old 6 volt coil back on and away it went by starter. Now I need to remember to change the light bulbs back to 6 volts before I need to plow snow after dark. For those of you wondering about the charging circuit, I kept the generator and replaced the cutout relay with a 30 amp solid state diode. Moved the lights to their own switch since the 3 position switch caused too much charge when used to turn on the lights. It worked very well but was rough on the starter since it was using 4 times the electrical power. It eroded the brushes more quickly and on occasion they would stick and it was necessary to beat on the starter to get it to engage. Now if I could just reduce the force needed to steer it.

Does it still have the large size (No. 2 or No. 1) battery cables on it? You also need those with the 6 volt system.

Well that could be a problem but that is also the reason why we converted to 12 volts in the first place.

When the starter is drawing hard on 6v, there is not a lot of extra current to push to the points for fire.

That is why all them old barns in Wisconsin had a ramp into the haymow. We always parked our manure spreader tractor and loader tractor on a hill for easy starting in the winter. Once we got one started all we had to do was pull any of the rest. That was all in a days work back then - now it is considered a pain in rear.

Dad was farming full time the year I was in kindergarten (1967) and I went to school in the afternoon. We had an old '57 Ford station wagon and he would hook up the tractor to it (when it frequently would not start), show me where to turn off the tractor, start everything moving (real slow) and then jump off the tractor and start the car with the clutch. When the car started he would blow the horn and I would shut the tractor off.
