I am looking at a buying a 970 Case with PowerShift. I have read many discussion threads about the granular details of the PowerShift, the clutches, repairs, etc but I am not understanding the basic operation. Are there multiple ranges then you can shift into different gears within the range without clutching? Is there just a hi/lo in each gear that you can shift between? What about reverse? Do you have to clutch to back-up? Sorry if these questions seem a bit on the stupid side...

Just an update and another thank-you to all who responded. I purchased the 970 (a white one with 6000 hrs), it was delivered in mid-October. It immediately went into a local repair shop to have the PTO clutches replaced. While it was there, I had it serviced, the cab door fixed (sheet metal had a tear), heat control fixed, new batteries, etc. I had paid $2750 for it on eBay, cost $400 to have it hauled home, spent $1100 on repairs. But for $4200, I have a clean, sharp looking, fast starting, smooth running, easy shifting, powerful tractor with a warm cab. Mechanic says with maintenance, it"ll easily run another 6000 hrs.

There are 4 forward gears that require the clutch to start, stop, and change gears. Once you're in gear and moving you can move through the three ranges back and forth w/o clutching. There is no hi-lo. You cannot go through the ranges in reverse. I was told not to use the clutch to stop if in the 3rd range of any gear. Bring it back down by hand, then clutch (don't know the reason for this). If you're in a cold climate, and it's cold out, let it warm up for a bit before you go.

Pushing down on the clutch while in high range will dump C2 and C3 and apply C4 at the same time. It's like putting on the emergency brake. Some have done it in 4th range and found themself in the windshield.

If you back out C-3 retard a little, it will not cause the emergency lockup. If you use the clutch pedal to downshift from third to second, C-2 shuttle valve will not let any clutch pack application pressure lower. That lockup was no fun with a 4wheeler with saddle tanks on the front!!!

Now that's an answer. Doing what Bill talks about wasn't a problem, but FIL didn't want me using the clutch with it in the high range to stop. I never had any trouble with the powershift whatsoever. Just a few simple rules to go by.

I know it is probably more wear to stomp on the "clutch" pedal while in 3rd but we have 6 Cases that have been used this way for over 3000 hrs a piece with 3 over 5500 hrs. Only had ONE with clutch problems (at 5400 hrs just a month ago) and it wasn't C2 or C3, was C4... suppose it was due to being a planting tractor and the years of stop and go.. from 2nd and not 3rd. Really that is a lot of hours and a little bit of cost.

Do not understand what you are saying ... you can tap the clutch and it will downshift .... say from high range to intermediate....tap it again and your in low range. Just do not put the clutch all the way down in high range unless you intend to stop.
