Hi; I just recently acquired a 1964 Case 440 tractor. It is triple-range(same as a 430). I can work all gears on the transmission, except "S". However, I can't figure out the use of the shuttle lever. The operator's manual says I should be able to go from forward to reverse on any of the speeds by clutching and moving the shuttle lever. With mine, any position of this lever (far left hand side), the tractor only goes forward... I always have to change gears to go reverse ("R")
Anybody experienced the same problem? Is the shuttle busted?

Bernard,
If you have a triple range transmission then you do not have a shuttle, it was only available with dual range or single range transmissions. There is not enough room in the torgue tube for both the triple range and the shuttle. Also most tractors with shuttle transmissions do not have reverse on the standard 4 speed transmission. The lever you are thinking is a shuttle lever is most likely the hand clutch , used to enable the pto while stopping tractor movement. You pull the lever back while tractor is in motion, the tractor stops but the pto keeps working. You snap it forward to start the tractor moving again.
The "S" is a start position used for starting the tractor there is an interloc that is enabled on the shifting cover that allows the starter to work only in the "S" position, often it is bypassed and the tractor will start with the shifter in any position. It is equivilent to the neutral safety switch on your car, only allows it to start in neutral.
Hope this helps

I know why your tractor won't go anywhere while it is in "s". This was a safety feature back then. The "s" is for start. On my 430 the only way to start the tractor is place the shifter in "s" and only then while turning the key my tractor will start. Should be a terminal post on the the left hand top of your gear shift cover plate that has some wires going to it. I don't know about having to change gears before it will change into reverse. Hope this helps
