Battery Drain?

The batteries on my 1965 Case 430 (diesel) drains down after a couple or three days. It has 2 new 6 volt, wired to produce 12 volts, batteries. The cable for the hour/tachometer runs between the batteries. I've visually checked everything and don't see a problem. Other than installing a switch to disconnect the battery when not in use, does anybody have any suggestions?

I was thinking that there might be a "common" problem somewhere that somebody would be familiar with. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated. I don't use the tractor but once a month or so I have to find a cure or the batteries won't last very long.

Has someone put an alternator on it? If so, I've heard that some alternators can create a drain. Might try disconnecting the alternator as part of your test. If equipped with a generator, sometimes the points in the voltage regulator will stick.

Thanks for the replies guys, I have a generator and it might be the points sticking in the regulator. I'm gonna try some of all 3 suggestions! Will post results and the culprit when I get it fixed. Thanks for your time guys.

My dad had a similar problem with his 831. Turns out someone had used a "universal" ignition switch and some of the wires were attached incorrectly. I put in the proper ignition switch and connected the wires correctly and it's been fine ever since.

Bob:

For general trouble shooting of possible battery drains, I use a simple method which has really worked well for me over the years.

I disconnect one cable from the battery set, either the positive or the negative, and clip lead a 12 volt lamp in series between the battery post and the cable end. If the light glows, that means that current is flowing, and then I unhook one wire at a time until the lamp goes out, and then I know isolated the problem.

I even found a 12 volt buzzer at Radio Shack, and I hooked it up with a dome lamp, soldered some alligator clip leads to it and use that so I can get both a visual and audio signal during the test. That way, I don"t have to even look at the lamp.

Try it, it works really well. I have even used an old sealed beam unit that had one filament burned out. The lugs on the back make it easy to hook leads to. Just make sure you use the terminals for the good filament!

HTH.

Frank has it right; If you follow his troubleshooting suggestions you will find the problem(s) soon and then you will have nothing to do at least for a while. Good luck short finder.

You may have more than one leak to ground, leave the wire off as you isolate each component. When the light is out connect back up keeping an eye on the light as you go.

Thanks, that's what I needed. I'll try your method & that should find it. This is a great site for stuff like this isn't it? I appreciate you taking the time to help me.
