VAC cracked block

When I was growing up, dad had a VAC he bought used. It had a cracked block below/behind the carburetor that the previous owner covered with JB weld or something. We ran it for years, but the oil was always milky, so I suspect the crack went to the inside as well.

I have looked at a few VACs over the past two years thinking I might want to restore one like dads. Of the three I have looked at, two had the same cracked block problem. Is this typical of the VACs or was this just a coincidence? Is it possible to repair, or should I just try to find one with a good block?

Dale

I'm in Central Ohio. If I decide to buy this tractor, how much would you want for a block?

IT WOULD PROBABLY DEPEND ON IF YOU WANT BARE BLOCK OR PARTIALLY ASSEMBLED LIKE IT SETS. BARE BLOCK WOULD BE SOMEWHERE AROUND $150-300. WE CAN WORK THAT OUT LATER IF YOU WANT IT.

We got our VAO back in '55 because it had a cracked block, and the man who owned it assumed it was junk. Ours was perhaps a little different in than it had a triangle piece of metal about 2x3 inches broken out of the block and gone. The local metals guy said the area was too thin to weld up or weld a cast patch in.
My father was a logger and remembered lots of drag saw engines so brazed up from cracks, "they looked like they were made of brass".) So he showed the block to a logging equipment repairman and the old fellow preheated the block and brazed a plate into place to repair the hole. We've used and abused the old girl for almost 50 years since without any problems. If you get someone to braze one up for you, Dad says to be sure and tell them to take the cam bearings out. The old gentleman appologized to dad because he had melted his cam bearings during the process, but he had replaced and aligned them for Dad already when he went to reclaim the repaired block. Hope this helps.

Nearly every VAC I've seen here in Ohio has a cracked block in the location you describe, including ours. Freezing weather, and no antifreeze used happens to cause that...

Ours was cracked in the outer waterjacket only, and not too bad to fix. However, since yours is getting water in the oil, I'd be looking for another block (without a crack!)

I have owned two VAO's and a VAC, and none of them had cracked blocks. I would definately try to find one without a cracked block rather than trying to repair a crack. VAC's are pretty common so I think you will be able to find one pretty easily.
