I am considering purchase of a 311 with adjustable wide front axle, LPG equipped w/front end loader. It is VERY hard to turn the tractor steering - even with the tractor in motion. It isn't power steering equipped, just manual. Is this normal for the model 311 with stated equipment. Is there an easy way to tell if the steering is functioning properly. Otherwise, it's a nice tractor with several levers that I don't know what they do.

Thanks for responding. My email address is
adam@beavermachineinc.com. My offer stands on the 300 Case with loader if your interested.
Where are you located? Would it be feasible to bring you a tractor if I purchase the LP? AJ

I'd consider purchasing the 300 LP if your going to pass on it. I would like to restore one. Please email me if you are so inclined. Thanks, AJ

If the u-joints aren't loose and climbing the yoke, then the issue is in the front gearbox above the front axle or in the spindles themselves. I'v seen the spindles sieze in the tube and take considerable effort to drive out. There are thrust bearings on the bottom side of the tube between spindle and tube. They must turn or steering will be affected. If your looking for a tractor to "use" LP tractors aren't the easiest to operate. If you want a gas 311 CASE I have one that steers easily with a Superior loader on it. Is the LP tractor your looking at a "round front" or is it a 311B with headlites in the front grill? JR

The tractor is a round front with headlights (sorta)above the hood cowling. My gratitude to the several that have posted valuable info on my question. It appears that with manual steering and a front end loader the steering will just be hard, even though according to this post there may be some binding in spindles or steering gearbox. I am considering passing on this one and continue to look for another tractor/front end loader. Thanks again.
