Case CC Disaster

My father has a 1936 Case CC he used for farming until 1982 in the Shelley, Idaho area (south of Idaho Falls about miles). He's used for moving snow from his driveway. He's always used hot water to fill the radiator and enginge block, then drained them after use. Well, he forgot to drain them the last time he used the tractor and cracked the radiator and engine block. The radiator can be replaced a lot easier than the engine block. I believe the Case CC was used from 1929 to around 1940/41 time frame. His Case CC is partially restored and for sentimental reasons (actually my mother's tractor and she passed away in March 2004) wants to keep it running. If he can find a running Case CC from that time, shouldn't he be able to swap out the engine block from any engine block for that time period and do all needed to get the tractor to run? Does anyone know of any non-restored Case CC tractors in the surrounding states of Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Montana and possibly Northern California that someone wants to sell or may want to sell for a parts tractor? Are there any tractor parts houses, on or off the Internet, that may have antique Case CC engine blocks?

Where do you live in eastern South Dakota?

I"m taking my Dad to a WW II reunion just east of Chicago, IL, leaving tentatively on Sunday, Sep 19 and the reunion is from Tuesday, Sep 21 through Thursday, Sep 23. We"ll be traveling on I-15 to I-80 and then on across to the Chicago area. No real time to take side trips. Coming back we"ll leave on Friday and have to be back in Idaho on Sunday, Sep 26. We might be able to take a side trip if we know what town you live in or are near by. We could travel through southern Wisconsin and Minnesota towards Sioux Falls area or go back on I"80 to Council Bluffs, Iowa, and then northward on I-29 to Sioux Falls area. Either way we"d have to adjust driving to where you live and we"ll have very little time to be in your area. I"ve been to Sioux Falls on I-29 and I-90 a couple of times so I"m somewhat familiar with southeastern South Dakota. We can take I-90 westward Bozeman, Montana and then head south to West Yellowstone and back into eastern Idaho.

My brother, Carlan, and my father will decide what to do about purchasing a more nearby engine block or checking out your free engine block offer. Their decision will determine if I drive my pickup or a car.

By the way my father was mostly raised in southeastern South Dakota near Wakonda, southeast of Mitchell and north east of Yankton.

I have a fairly complete CC that I would part with. The engine is from a 1930 model and the rest is 1936. E-mail me if you want to.

Dan

My next older brother lives near my father and knows the condition of the engine block and radiator better than I do. I"ll contact him to look at the suggestions and engine block availability to see what he and my father want to do. Thanks for helping.

I am Dann's brother and live in Idaho Falls just a few miles from where our Dad's tractors has been used and stored on the family farm. I have seen the cracked block and there is at least 30 inches of crack showning on the out side of the block. Dad patched the out cracks with plumbers puddy on the out side to slow the leaks so we could see if the block was cracked on the inside by putting water back in the block and seeing if water ran out of the crank case drain. It ran out big time as fast as we put it in. The radiator is likely cracked also, but we have not been able to get enough water in the block to full up the radiator. We can deal with the radiator later if we can find a new engine block. How can we determine if a "C" block will fit into the 1936 CC? In the shed with the CC case is is a 1948 case with electric starter. I have compared the blocks and they look the same except for the bell housing where the starter is located. This tractor is my uncles and he does not want to part out the tractor at this time. It still runs and is in good shape except for paint and a few other small things.

Could you send a photo of the "C" engine block?
What condition is the block in?
We would be willing to buy the whole tractor is need be.

Thanks for responding to my brothers message.

I have no way of sending pictures.

The blocks for all C series tractors (C, CC, CE, etc.) will swap with no problem-same part number.

THis block is one I bought 8 years ago to trade for a CE power unit the owner wanted to part out for the same reason you need a block. He died and I bought the power unit on his estate sale. The tractor he needed the block for went to someone else. I've offered it to him several timesd but he has never said yes, so if someone else wants it it's sold.

CAll me in the evenings at (406) 454-8758 if you're interested; my home E-mail does'nt work well.

If it's just an external crack and the sleeves aren't damaged, it might be repairable. Even an internal crack in the upper part of the block may not hurt anything. If you don't think its repairable, call Dale Canterbury in Twins Falls, ID to see if he can help with parts. Email me if you need his phone number.

If the crack is behind the manifold area, I have seen alot of them welded,Also a dc engine would bolt up to it.Began filling the engine with water and open the top drain plug on the oil pan, If you are lucky only the out side of the block is cracked. Good luck

I am Dann's brother. Water runs out the oil drain pan plug as fast as we put it in the radiator. There is at least 30 inches of outside crack on the intake and exhaust side both behind the manifold and forward to the front of the engine. The cracks extend to the rear of the engine block and around the corner between the block and the gas tank. The blocks done for. Dad at 87 years old feels really bad. The tractor was a wedding gift from his father-in-law 62 years ago. Mom died last Feb. When we went to get the tractor ready for the Shelley Spud Day festible and put water in the radiator and it ran out the side of the block Dad sat down cried and said MOM will never forgive me for distroying her tractor. We are still putting the tractor in the Shelley Spud Day parade but it will ride on the back of a 1959 GMC truck I restored this last year.

We need another tractor with a good block or just a good block. We can rebuild the engine if we had a block. What years engines might enterchange with the 1936 case CC?

Carlan, All c and cc blocks will work for you from 1929 to 1939. Even the dc model blocks would bolt up also tho they had provision for a starter. There is alot of good people on this board that will help you out. I own a cc case that my dad bought in the early 40,s that was the same condition as yours. He took the head off to find that a sleeve was cracked. He then welded the block alittle at a time after he had stripped the block. He used the tractor every day uptill 1967 when he bought a new case. I tracked it down and bought it. It had a crack from the water pump all the way back to the fuel tank, so it can be done but hopefully you can find another block.Good luck Bill
